Every year in December, the sunrise slips farther and farther south, until it reaches the limit of its annual excursion and turns back from the darkest days of winter. Throughout the world, from the stone age to now, people have kept track of the sun's travels, celebrated its annual itinerary in astronomically-timed rituals, aligned monuments with the sun's turning point, and told stories that symbolized the seasonal changes that accompanied the sun's journey. Griffith Observatory Director Dr. E.C. Krupp will showcase some of the ancient solstitial monuments he has studied personally—from stone age Ireland to pharaonic Egypt and from Imperial China to darkest California.
